Art on the menu
As part of its family-friendly educational outreach program, Margaritas Mexican restaurant in Orono will hold a public demonstration by Mexican wood carver Epifanio Fuentes Vasquez from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Vasquez, a native of Oaxaca, Mexico, combines religious, decorative and traditional motifs in his sculptures, which are painted in bright, whimsical colors by his wife, Laurencia Santiago. Vasquez has shown his work at the International Museum of Folk Art in Santa Fe, N.M., and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. For more information, call 866-4863 or visit www.margs.com.
Cooking the books
Looking for a book you can really sink your teeth into? Check out BOOKS2EAT 2003, an international edible book festival scheduled for 3-5 p.m. Thursday, April 10, at Rangeley Hall on the campus of Eastern Maine Community College (formerly EMTC) in Bangor. The annual event, which features edible books such as the pictured entry by Carol Hahn at New York’s Center for Book Arts in 2001, is a “friend-raiser” for EMCC’s library. Admission costs $7 and includes tea, refreshments and a chance to vote on and eat the books. If you bring an edible book, the admission fee will be waived. For information or to submit an entry, call Deb Perro at 941-4601 or Sue Jagels at 973-8227. For inspiration, visit www.colophon.com/ediblebooks.
A tasteful sale
If you’re an avid reader, you probably already know about the American Association of University Women’s annual book sale. But you may not know about the gourmet luncheon/snack bar menu there. The event takes place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Church of Universal Fellowship in Orono (early birds can get in at 8 a.m.). The menu includes chowder, Italian tomato soup, Philadelphia gourmet luncheon salad, which is apparently quite a hit, and a selection of healthy homemade sandwiches such as ham and Alpine Lace cheese, or sliced fresh roasted herb chicken breast.
