Now is the time to make reservations for the Bangor Symphony Orchestra’s Annual Dinner and Auction, following the final BSO concert at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, April 13, at Wells Commons at the University of Maine in Orono.

Presented by the BSO and UnitedKingfield Bank, “Picture This” features original works by Maine artists and additional items, varying from American Airlines to Red Sox tickets, golf packages and catered meals.

Tickets for the dinner and auction are $35 each, or $10 for the auction only, which begins when auctioneer Bruce Buxton bangs the gavel at 6:30 p.m.

The BSO’s Catherine LeClair reports the theme emphasizes visual art and that most of the pieces were created for the BSO juried art exhibit, “Music Revelations,” which called for artists to create work in response to the music, “Pictures at an Exhibition,” composed by Mussorgsky.

Christine Szal chairs the event. Transportation to Wells Commons from the Maine Center for the Arts will be provided after the concert.

Auction artwork can be viewed 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the BSO office, 51 Main St., Bangor.

Participating artists are Dayna Boyles, Kenny Cole, George Danby, Robert Diamante, Jill Disque, Emma Gray, Forest Hart, Sue Anne Hodges, Nina Jerome, June Kellogg, Marni Lawson, Margaret Manter, Barbara Martin and Danuta Musynska.

Also Hanna Nelsbach, Wendy Newcomb, Whitney Oppersdorff, Ann Slocum, Kim and Philippe Villard, Mette Watt and Margaret Whalen.

Before he died in September 2002 and while traveling to Bath for treatment, the late Bob Gagnon of Rockland dreamed of establishing a cancer care center to serve those among whom he lived.

His family and friends continue that dream, said Thomas Molloy of Rockland, a member of the Bob Gagnon Cancer Care Committee.

The fourth Bob Gagnon Family Dinner and Auction is 5-8 p.m. Friday, April 4, at the Rockland Lodge of Elks, 210 Rankin St.

Tickets, which can be purchased at the door or from committee members Molloy, Bill Benner, Joni Hilt or Brenda Atkinson, are $8 for adults and $4 for children under the age of 12.

Bruce Gamage will auction a large selection of items at this family event, which features fish and meat on the menu.

In a tragic November accident in Aroostook County, a Houlton teenager died and 10 others were injured.

A benefit supper, featuring roast beef and turkey, is planned for 5:30-7 p.m. Saturday, April 5, at the Houlton Elks Club. Admission is by donation.

The event will benefit the family of Donna Sennett, whose children, Stephanie Sennett and Curtis Swimm, were among the injured, and help raise funds for a scholarship in memory of the late Alan “Allie” Belyea, who was a member of the sophomore class at Houlton High School.

Debate coach Debe Averill and assistant coach Pat Jenkins have announced that Bangor High School will host the National Forensics League National Qualifier for policy debate Saturday, April 12.

Policy teams from Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont will compete to represent this area at the National NFL Tournament June 7-14 in Atlanta.

The coaches report, however, that throughout the Maine debate season, “we have had a shortage of experienced policy judges,” and this meet requires more judges than normal, “since panels of three judges, instead of single judges, will be used fairly early in the day.”

The coaches want to know if there are people in our area who competed in policy debate in high school or college and want to become involved in the activity again, and if there are people, “especially attorneys, whose careers involve logic and argumentation,” who would be willing to participate in this event.

A training session to familiarize potential judges can be scheduled at one’s convenience.

This year’s policy debate topic is “Resolved: That the United States federal government should substantially increase public health services for mental health care in the United States.”
