MONTPELIER, Vt. – A Marine corporal from South Burlington and an Army helicopter pilot from Bennington have died in the fighting in Iraq, their families confirmed Friday.

Chief Warrant Officer 4th Class Erik A. Halvorsen, 40, was piloting a Black Hawk helicopter near the city of Karbala when he crashed Wednesday, Halvorsen’s sister, Karen Loebe of Petaluma, Calif., told The Associated Press. Halvorsen’s father, Halvor A. Halvorsen lives in Richmond, Maine.

Cpl. Mark Evnin, 21, died from a gunshot wound to his abdomen, his mother, Mindy Evnin, told the AP.
