An article in the Bangor Daily News on March 29-30 quotes Andy Rooney of “60 Minutes” as questioning whether embedded news reporters with the troops are proving their worth. It would appear Rooney is talking about dollars and cents, which seems to be how his network evaluates news. As far as truth in reporting on the war, the embedded reporters appear to have a AAA rating.
As far as Ernie Pyle’s access to privates and generals during World War II, I suspect it was because he was trusted. He may not have looked the part but he was the first-class act as far as GIs on the battlefield were concerned.
Rooney’s mention of Pyle reminds me of a presidential candidate who compared himself to President Kennedy – it did not fly.
May God bless the American and allied troops.
