PORTLAND – A Marine from South Portland who was injured in a land mine explosion in Iraq had two toes amputated but did not lose his left foot, his father said Thursday.
Jeffrey McCue, father of Cpl. Eric McCue, said he got the good news in a telephone call from his son after he came out of surgery at a military hospital in Iraq.
The elder McCue was initially told that his 21-year-old son had his left foot amputated after stepping on a land mine this week while serving on the front lines as a Marine infantryman.
McCue, who graduated from South Portland High School in 2000, is expected to be transferred to a military base in Germany within the next few days.
