UMaine sweeps two twinbills from Pace Collar, MacDonald strong for Bears

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The University of Maine baseball team pounded out 20 hits in a doubleheader against Pace Sunday while limiting the Setters to eight, en route to a weekend sweep at Finnerty Field.

Maine won Sunday’s opener 10-3 and took the nightcap 8-3, and picked up 5-1 and 2-0 wins Saturday behind strong pitching performances from Mike Collar and Mike MacDonald.

Collar allowed only one hit and struck out 15 in his 2-0, eight-inning victory while MacDonald scattered five hits while striking out nine.

Brett Ouellette racked up six RBIs in the four games for the Black Bears, who are now 16-6.

In Sunday’s first game, Maine’s Jesse Carlton went 3-for-4 with a double and two singles, including a hit that plated two runs in the Bears’ four-run seventh inning. Simon Williams added a two-run single later in the seventh inning.

Joe Drapeau cracked a two-out, three-run homer to left in the first inning off Pace starter Bobby Van Riper.

Greg Norton (3-0) picked up the win for Maine. He allowed four hits and three runs, all earned, while striking out six over six innings.

Rob Faist hit a two-run homer and a solo shot for the Setters (4-19).

In Sunday’s second game, freshman Sam Warner shut down Pace in the final four innings of the game. Warner earned the win after giving up one hit, no runs and one walk to go with seven strikeouts.

Carlton singled and doubled, and Drapeau chipped in with two singles.

Maine rallied from a two-run deficit in the fourth, in which the Bears scored four runs. Joe Drapeau scored on a passed ball in that inning, Mike Livulpi came in on a Steve Gambale groundout, Williams’ RBI single plated Mark Reichley and Williams got home on an error.

The Bears piled on three more runs in the fifth. Livulpi earned an RBI on a sacrifice fly, Drapeau doubled and later scored on a throwing error, and Reichley came home on a wild pitch.

Ouellette hit his fifth home run of the season in the first but Maine starter Greg Creek walked four in three innings.

Faist doubled and singled and drove in a run.

In Saturday’s first game, the Bears scored three runs in the top of the seventh to provide insurance for what had been a one-run Maine lead.

Livulpi led off the inning with a single, and a throwing error put Simon Williams at first and sent Livulpi to third. Carlton hit a double to plate Livulpi and Williams. Carlton advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a Brett Ouellette single.

Ouellette slammed a two-run homer in the third, driving in Ryan Quintal, who had singled. Ouellette finished with three hits and three RBIs.

In Saturday’s second game, Collar outdueled Pace’s Jim Smith to give Maine the victory.

Both pitchers threw the entire game, but the Bears scored two runs in the top of the eighth for the win.

Ouellette sparked Maine with a two-out single. He advanced to second on a single by Alain Picard and got to third on an error. Joe Drapeau smacked a double to drive in Ouellette and Picard.

Collar fanned two pinch-hitters and induced a groundout in the bottom of the eighth to clinch the win.

The Bears stranded five baserunners. Livulpi got to third base in the seventh inning when he walked, stole second, and advanced on a wild pitch, but the Setters used a double play to end the threat.

Class act

Asa Grunenwald really made the grade for St. John’s.

The senior catcher missed the start of the Red Storm’s game against Delaware State on Tuesday because of academic obligations. But Grunenwald arrived at the field in the fifth inning, went into the game in the seventh and drove in the go-ahead run the following inning as the Red Storm won 6-5.

With the game tied at 5 in the eighth, Greg Thomson hit a leadoff double, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Grunenwald’s single past shortstop.

NOTEBOOK: Kentucky’s Keith Madison announced Tuesday that he is resigning as coach at the end of the season. Madison, in his 25th year, was 724-619-5 heading into this weekend’s series at Mississippi State. … Charlotte’s Randall Poplin hit .478 with a homer and 14 RBIs last week. … Eastern Illinois’ Bret Pignatiello hit .524 with five homers and seven RBIs last week.
