Orono High Relay for Life team plans supper

There are many, many special “Relay for Life” stories, but here is one that I am particularly pleased to share with you.

“My name is Lura Raymond,” she wrote in her e-mail to me, “and I have been involved in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life for seven years now. My family got involved in the event after my mother died of cancer.

“Over the years, schoolmates of mine joined me in the event,” she wrote, “and now Orono High School is a Relay for Life School.”

Understandably, the OHS junior added, “we are very proud of how much the event has grown in our school.”

To help raise funds for its participation in the Old Town Relay for Life event, Raymond and her friends are hosting a spaghetti supper at 5 p.m. Thursday, April 10, in the cafeteria at OHS.

The cost is just $5 per person, and all proceeds benefit the ACS Relay for Life.

The Old Town Relay For Life is 6 p.m. Friday, May 16, to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at Old Town High School.

If you would like to join Raymond and the OHS team in this event, either as a participant or as a volunteer, call the ACS at 1-800-464-3102 and press 3, or call 989-0322.

Piano teachers from the Bangor area and the Maine coast have selected 19 students to participate in the 2003 Student Piano Performance at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, at All Souls Congregational Church on Broadway in Bangor.

A special guest appearance will be made by Barbara Smith of Orono, playing some of the music she composed and recorded on her CD, “A Sense of Acadia.”

Students from elementary school through high school will perform on the Arlan A. Baillie Steinway Grand.

The series offers them an opportunity to play for each other, inspire one another and experience performing on a grand piano in a concert setting.

Teachers of the performers are Nancy Colter, Joanne Westin, Daryl Rhodes, Sally Pendleton, Kay Eames, Paulina Glazman, Ellen Newton, Patricia Stowell, Sandra Blanchette, Ginger Hwalek and Ruth Gelsinger.

The public is invited, free of charge, and a reception follows the concert.

The second, delicious Friends of the Eastern Maine Technical College Library BOOKS2EAT2003 is 3-5 p.m. Thursday, April 10, at Rangeley Hall on Sylvan Road on the EMTC campus in Bangor.

It’s a great fund-raiser, and anyone can contribute an edible book for the event, which also includes a high silver tea.

If you contribute an edible book for display (and for devouring later), your admission is free.

Otherwise, you must pay $7 for the privilege of ogling and eating the entries.

High tea will be served throughout the event, but voting on the entries lasts just one hour, from 3 to 4 p.m., because after that the books will be eaten!

To submit an entry, or receive more information, call Deb Perro, 941-4601.

If you want to whip up something in a hurry and need some ideas, you can view festival examples at www.colophon.com/

Proceeds from the fund-raiser benefit the EMTC library.

Members of the Brewer High School Class of 1948 are hard at work planning their 55th reunion, which is to take place this summer on a date and at a site yet to be determined.

In their efforts to locate all class members, they’re left with a few they cannot find, reports Phyllis Patterson Doughty of Brewer. BHS Class of ’48 would like to know the whereabouts of Joan Bulduc Andersen, Connie Howard Kendrick, Naoma Bartlett Kearns and Frank Paulette.

If you have information on these individuals, please call Doughty at 989-4613.

Helen Gallagher writes “there is just one month” left before Maine Central Institute hosts its Open Flea Market 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at Parks Gymnasium on the MCI campus in Pittsfield.

Gallagher reports the committee hopes all nonprofit clubs and organizations in the area will consider renting space at the event. Space inside is $20; space outside $15 and, if you need a table, it’s $5 extra.

“Anything you sell at this event will be a profit for your organization,” she added. “Come join the fun.”

To reserve space, call Gallagher, 938-4703, or Debbie Ladd, 487-3733.

Proceeds benefit MCI music and sports programs.
