NEW LIMERICK – Houlton firefighters were kept busy overnight Wednesday after a fire broke out in the dryer bin at the Louisiana-Pacific mill on Station Road.

The mill manufactures oriented strand board, which is made from dried wood chips that are glued and pressed together into sheets.

At about 8:15 p.m. Wednesday, the Houlton Fire Department was called to assist the mill’s fire brigade in fighting a fire in a bin used to dry the wood chips.

About two dozen firefighters responded with two pumpers and an aerial ladder truck. They were at the scene for more than two hours.

They were called back to the mill at about 11:15 p.m. when it was discovered that fire had burned into a wall and extended to the roof. They left the mill at 4 a.m. Thursday.

No one was available Thursday at the mill who could provide an estimate of the damage, but it was not believed to be serious, according to one Houlton firefighter.
