ORONO – Boston University pitching allowed only four hits Thursday as the Terriers posted back-to-back shutouts while sweeping an America East softball doubleheader from Maine.
The Terriers won the opener 1-0 and earned 12-0 win in the nightcap, which was shortened to five innings by the 10-run rule.
In the first game, Kristen Knesek scored the only run when Jennifer Merchant walked Abbey Pauley with the bases loaded in the fifth inning.
Knesek singled twice for the Terriers behind Julie Henneke, who pitched a two-hitter, striking out eight and walking one.
Jennifer Merchant gave up only three hits and one run for Maine.
Brittany Cheney and Lindsay Taylor each had a single for UMaine to back Merchant, who scattered three hits while striking out eight and walking two.
In the second game, Erin McDonald and Tiffany Finateri combined on a two-hitter and were backed by a 13-hit attack.
Henneke tripled and singled with four RBIs for BU. DeKenya Williams hit a double and a single good for three RBIs.
Jessica Brady singled twice for the Bears behind loser Sarah Bennis.

At Waterville, Wendy Bonner hit two doubles, a single, had four RBIs and scored a run on a Lauren Olmsted single to give Colby College the win.

Annette Caswell had a double and an RBI and Kate Hurd scored two runs for Thomas.

At Standish, Jesse LaCasse hit a home run and a double to help Saint Joseph’s College beat Husson College of Bangor.
Howard Rutherford hit three singles and knocked in a run for the Monks, who had three pitchers combine on a four-hitter. Justin Lambert had two RBIs.
Jason Harvey had two singles for Husson and Jason Folsom doubled.

At Gorham, Nick Adams scored the winning run from second base for Brandeis in the 11th inning on a Jeff Krasner ground ball that was thrown away for an error.
Jeremy Tarohad a RBI double in the seventh inning to tie the game for Brandeis. Sean Ewers hit a RBI single in the 10th to put them ahead 3-2.
Adam Lemieux hit an RBI infield single in the eighth to force the game into extra innings for Southern Maine. Lemieux would tie the game again with a RBI single in the 10th.
