WISCASSET – Jeff Burgess of Oakland surged to the lead halfway through the race and held on to win the opener in the pro stock division at Wiscasset Raceway Saturday.
Wiscasset’s Scott Chubbuck, the pole sitter, took the early lead and battled Travis Benjamin of Belfast, Peter Oakes of Boothbay, and Scott Delano of Friendship.
Chubbuck, Benjamin, and Louie Mechelidas of Tyngsboro, Mass., paced the field over the first 18 laps until Burgess jumped out of line and passed the trio to take the lead. He then survived three restarts to take the victory.
Chubbuck finished second, Mechelidas took third, and Benjamin placed fourth, even though his car was smoking badly at the end of the race. Bill Penfold of Yarmouth finished fifth.
Wiscasset Raceway returns to action Saturday with the Pro All-Stars Series, the Quik Stop PASS 150. The grandstand opens at 11 a.m. and time trials begin at 1 p.m.
