Early morning fire in Bucksport destroys garage, vehicles

BUCKSPORT – An early morning fire Monday destroyed a garage and several vehicles inside.

The fire department received a call at about 2:30 a.m., reporting a fire at the home of Darren Nadeau on Central Street, about 21/2 miles from the fire station.

Firefighters arrived at the scene within several minutes and found the garage, which is attached to the home, engulfed in flames, according to a report from Fire Chief Craig Bowden.

The firefighting team entered the house and fought the blaze from inside. They had the fire under control within 10 minutes, Bowden said. Fire damage was contained to the garage and one room between the garage and the house.

The main house was not damaged, Bowden said in a prepared release. The breezeway between the house and garage had heat and smoke damage, but the garage was destroyed. The fire also destroyed a car, a boat and two motorcycles inside the garage. Damage was estimated at several thousand dollars.

Four people had been inside the building when the fire started. They escaped uninjured. Several pets also were saved from the fire.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation Monday afternoon.

Bucksport firefighters were assisted at the scene by crews from Orrington and Orland through an automatic mutual aid agreement between the towns.

They also provided coverage of the Bucksport station while local firefighters remained at the scene.
