MACHIAS – Some students at the University of Maine at Machias are proposing solutions to the region’s drug abuse problems. They will present their findings April 25-29 in a campus display.
In a news release Tuesday, UMM said the students are participants in a behavioral science senior seminar.
Results of the information they gathered will be on display in the lobby of Kimball Hall, where it will be available for public viewing during business hours.
Michael J. Kimball, assistant professor of anthropology, said members of the senior seminar worked as “improvement teams” on drug abuse, a problem said by community leaders, including those in law enforcement, to be of paramount concern.
“The purpose of this year’s senior seminar is to provide students with the opportunity to see themselves as change agents in their community and to learn and practice effective methods for developing and implementing solutions,” Kimball said.
“Our goal is to explore the problem of drug abuse in Washington County and propose grass-roots solutions that will be effective and sustainable,” he said.
Kimball said members of the community who are concerned about drug abuse are invited to visit the exhibition to learn more about the problem and gather ideas about how to end it.
