Vance helps USM softball earn sweep

BOSTON – Kari Vance of Lincoln fired a three-hitter Tuesday afternoon and the University of Southern Maine softball team beat the University of Massachusetts-Boston 4-0. The Huskies then exploded for 13 hits in the second game of the doubleheader and rolled to a 9-1 win.

In the first game, Vance had seven strikeouts and junior Jordan Gatcomb stroked a two-run double in the sixth inning to lead the Huskies

In the second game, Kristi Steward had three hits, including a triple, and scored four runs, while Sara McLean had two singles, three RBIs and scored twice. Renee Heath had two singles and two RBIs for Southern Maine.

Katie Mainville and Melissa Henderson combined to limit the Beacons to one hit.

St. Joseph’s sweeps UMF

At Farmington, the Monks swept a doubleheader from the Beavers, taking the first game 7-2 and cruising to a 10-1 win in the second.

In the first game, Kristin Gaudette pitched a two-hitter for St. Joseph’s of Standish and added a two-run double to lead the Monks past the Beavers.

UMaine-Farmington’s Lauren Stacey limited the Monks to one run through seven innings.

In the second game, Jessie Dennis had three RBIs for the Monks while Darcy Lee hit a double and a single and Courtney Sirois added two singles.

Dorice Reitchel singled twice for UM-Farmington.

At Gorham, freshman Josh Watkins drove in five runs, senior Tyler Delorme drove in four and senior Andy Lang had three RBIs as the Huskies banged out 23 hits, including nine for extra bases, as they romped past Endicott.

Four of Watkins’ five RBIs came on one swing of the bat when he hit a grand slam home run in third inning.

Lang tripled twice while Delorme and Drew Palmer also hit three-baggers.

Delorme, Watkins, Adam Lemieux and Paul Tedesco had doubles for the Huskies.
