Headliners

Hard rock and hip-hop will battle for the title of “showstopper” in the headlining spots of this year’s Bumstock festival.

SoCal rockers (hed) Planet Earth and solo rap artist Fat Joe will play the final slots on Friday and Saturday night.

Taking a break from preshow warm-ups in Kansas City, Kan., hed’s frontman Jahred Shaine described the group’s live show as intense, humorous, dark, honest and sweaty.

“It’s like a fighter getting on stage,” Shaine said. “Nobody’s ever let down.”

Together for more than a decade, the six-piece mixes fierce guitar lines with grooving rhythms under Shaine’s freestyle melodies and occasional raspy growls. Far from many cookie-cutter rap-metal acts in the industry, Shaine said (hed) Planet Earth evolves by seeking dynamic influences.

“We’re like the only band that will go into an Iron Maiden [heavy metal] type song and then into a Bob Marley tribute and then into punk music in like, 95 seconds,” Shaine said.

Hip-hop will be the flavor of choice in the festival’s second night with East Coast rapper Fat Joe. On his recent album, “Loyalty,” the South Bronx native talks about his sister’s passing, racial profiling and the emotional events of 9-11.

While his lyrical style may strike some as rough or even “hard-core,” Joe has worked to develop broad appeal.

“I make music for everybody and I came into this game to be a superstar,” Joe said in a recent interview.

And that he has become. In the past year, Fat Joe has gone platinum with “Jealous Ones Still Envy,” garnered the most-played single in Atlantic Records’ history with “What’s Luv” (featuring Ashanti) and co-hosted MTV’s Spring Break.

Thankful to be doing what he loves, Fat Joe is still fascinated by the creation of the music.

“I’m beginning to think artists have a chemical imbalance,” Joe said. “We listen to beats, and out of nowhere, you hear the right one. It’s like a forest opens up in your head.”

Known for bringing an entourage of more than a dozen to road shows, there’s a chance Fat Joe’s performance at Bumstock might include an appearance by a recent collaborator.

No word on whom that might be.

Tickets for Bumstock for nonundergraduate students are $10. The show is for ages 18 and up. On Friday, gates open at 4 p.m. and on Saturday, gates open at 1:30 p.m.

Correction: A story in Friday’s Style section gave the wrong start time for the Bumstock festival to be held next weekend on the University of Maine campus in Orono. The gates will open at 4 p.m. Friday, April 25, and 2 p.m. Saturday, April 26.
