BELFAST – Matt Welch belted a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth inning to put the game away for the host Lions as they knocked off Winslow 13-3 in baseball action Thursday.

Silas Ratten added a single and a double for two RBIs while John Ellis hit a three-run double. Nick Arthers helped out with a two-run double.

Taylor Helberg hit a two-run homer for the Winslow effort while David Haurnan chipped in with two singles.

At East Machias, Whitney Stevens smacked a grand slam home run in the bottom of the first inning to start the scoring for Washington Academy.

Steven Colbeth hit a three-run homer while James Ramsdell had a double and two singles. Brandon Albee and Corey Colbeth each added a double.

Justin McCoubrey, Josh Engroff and Jeremy Gillespie constituted the Woodland offense with a single apiece.

At Ellsworth, senior Seth Mayo struck out 15 batters and allowed only two hits and no walks to help shut down Sumner and give Ellsworth their first win of the season.

Asa Jones hit a double and a triple for two RBIs while Matt Wood had two singles and scored two runs. Don Smith helped out with a two-run double for the Eagles.

Dylan Johnson had a double for Sumner while A.J. Pennartz hit a single.

At Hermon, Adam Russell pitched a shutout in his first game of the season, striking out five batters and walking only three.

Kyle Stone hit two singles for three RBIs while Chris Rabideau sent home two runners with two singles. Eric Day contributed with a triple and a single for an RBI.

Brett Danforth and Dustin Jalbert hit a single apiece for Hermon while Joey Schacht had nine strikeouts in four innings of play.

At East Machias, Katie Smith hit two doubles and had an RBI to help Woodland to the win.

Stef Almendinger led the Washington Academy effort with a double, two singles and an RBI while Adrianne Merritt added two singles.

At Belfast, Sam Ellis hit two singles and had three RBIs to help lead the Lions past Winslow.

Kate Ross sent home two runners with a single and a double while Ashley Bryant added two singles and an RBI. Nicole Hubbard chipped in with a single and a double for Belfast.

Rachel Boutin hit a double and a single for Winslow while Beth LaFontaine had two singles.

Janay Tucker pitched the complete game for Sumner.
