BOSTON – Maine will receive more than $1.6 million from the federal government to help fund emergency management activities in the state, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced Friday. Each state received funding under the Emergency Preparedness and Response Directorate.

Tom Ridge, head of Homeland Security, said the Federal Emergency Management Agency grant will help Maine cope with any emergency that might arise.

“This grant will give Maine and its local communities the flexibility to allocate funds according to risk and vulnerabilities and to address the most urgent state and local needs in disaster mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery,” said Michael D. Brown, undersecretary for Emergency Preparedness and Response.
