AUGUSTA – A state senator from Dixfield was charged with drunken driving after registering a blood alcohol content of 0.11 percent, police said.

Sen. Bruce Bryant, a Democrat, was stopped shortly before midnight Wednesday after he left Margarita’s Mexican Restaurant and police saw his vehicle swerve and nearly strike a curb on Western Avenue, Lt. Bill Hayward said.

After being given a field sobriety test, Bryant was taken to the police station and given a Breathalyzer test to determine his blood alcohol content. The legal limit is 0.08 percent.

Hayward said Bryant told police he had one alcoholic drink at Margarita’s. He is scheduled to appear May 21 in District Court in Augusta.

Bryant, 41, declined to comment on the charge.

A boiler operator for Mead Paper in Rumford, Bryant is serving his first term as senator. He previously served six years in the state House of Representatives.
