To stop a highway

Recently, I stood outside the Bangor Police Athletic League building on Watchmaker Street. Route 95, a four-lane highway, was about a mile away. I was stunned by the noise level and the constant roar of the highway, even from this distance.

The Maine Department of Transportation wants to put a similar four-lane highway through Eddington. That highway will make the residents sick to their stomachs with its constant noise.

We can’t stop the highway at the local level because we don’t have enough money, will or political power. All we can do is push the highway back and forth until it doesn’t get too close to one of us. Of course, other people in Eddington will have their homes destroyed and their quality of life ruined.

The state doesn’t have the money to build the highway, so the key to stopping it is Washington, D.C. If you oppose the highway destroying your nice, quiet country town of Eddington, write a letter to Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe. Ask them to vote against any federal funding for the four-lane highway through Eddington.
