HOLDEN – Two teams from the Holbrook School in Holden have won the honor of representing their school and communities at the Destination Imagination Global finals in Knoxville, Tenn., May 21-24.
The Theater Smarts team members are Danny Wheeler, Michael Sekera, Brian Cowan, Ricky Adams, Kristy Kearns, and Kaylie Hopkins. Their coaches are Ann Marie Wheeler and Don Spencer.
The Once Improv a Time team members are Anthony Castiglia, William Dunoskovic, Nick Gramlich, Nat Hewett, Sam Rioux and Sam Swanton. Their coach is Yolanda Castiglia.
Destination Imagination is a community- and school-sponsored program that gives children the tools to think on their feet and to work together as a team to solve sometimes complex, imaginative problems and to perform their team-created solutions at progressive competitions.
Competitors range in age from elementary level to university and military level. They begin by competing regionally and the top teams move on to statewide competition and global finals.
Four teams represented the Holbrook School at the regional level this year and two teams go on to the global finals. Both teams are composed of eighthgraders, some of whom have been involved with Destination Imagination for as many as seven years and some for whom this is the first year of participation.
Now they face an even bigger challenge. Funds have to be raised to send the two teams to Tennessee and the children will raise money for transportation, room and board.
Each team member has agreed to commit to at least two community service projects this summer as a way to thank businesses and individuals for their support. They will develop a list of organizations and possible ways they can be of service, and complete those arrangements after the competition in May.
Fund-raising events team members have planned include a raffle; a spaghetti dinner 5:30 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at the Holbrook School, where the teams will perform the solutions to their Destination Imagination problems; car washes, bake sales, candy and plant sales. The raffle drawing will be on June 12. Prizes include 20 pounds of lobster from McLaughlin’s Seafood, 100 gallons of gasoline from Cowan’s Service Station, movie passes, massages, restaurant and store gift certificates.
Those who would like to purchase raffle tickets, to help with fund-raising efforts or organizations with service projects in mind, should call Laura Adams at 843-7936 or Donna Hopkins at 989-2908.
