National Dance Week

National Dance Week, April 25-May 4, will be celebrated at the Bangor Mall 2-5 p.m. Sunday, May 4, and Kathie Jamison Cote is seeking dance studios to participate. Last year the celebration featured 80 dancers from Back Door Dance Studio in Eddington, Top Hat II in Hampden and Holden, Northern Lights Dance Studio in Brewer and DanceArts in Ellsworth. Adoption information

The Bangor office of the Department of Human Services will host an informational meeting about adoption and foster care in Bangor 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday, May 12. Spruce Run volunteers

Spruce Run Association, the domestic violence project serving Penobscot County, is looking for volunteers. Needed are:

. Hot line workers – Spruce Run provides a 43-hour training session for hot line workers, which prepares them to support people affected by domestic violence. The training includes presentations on the dynamics of domestic violence and crisis intervention skill development. No prior experience is required. Spring-O-Rama

Cookie decorating, beanbag and ring tosses, and a springtime trail and obstacle course are part of the fifth annual Spring-O-Rama from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at Sprague’s Nursery and Garden Center, Outer Union Street. The Back Door Dance Studio will give demonstrations. The event will benefit the Children’s Miracle Network of Eastern Maine Healthcare. The cost is $2. Call 973-5758 for information.

Great TV Auction

Maine PBS will kick off its 32nd annual Great TV Auction at 8 p.m. Friday, April 25. The 10-day auction is a live, televised shopping extravaganza to raise money for commercial-free programming. It features thousands of items up for bid, including a Dodge Caravan, a Toyota Prius hybrid car, furniture, getaways, and fine arts and crafts from Maine artists. During the week of April 20, the Great TV Auction Guide will appear in Bangor Daily News. The Maine PBS Web site at www.mainepbs.org/auction contains a detailed listing of most of the items up for bid. Bidders may bid by telephone. To obtain a personal bid number, call (800) 884-1717.

Bangor Band concert

The Bangor Band will present a Spring Preview of its summer parks concerts with a performance at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 4, at Hermon High School auditorium.

Fred Heath will conduct the concert and with Esther Melichar will perform the flute solo “Concertino” by Cecile Chaminade.

The marches, orchestra pops transcriptions, band compositions, popular medleys, patriotic and dance music are performed each season by the 144-year-old semiprofessional ensemble. The Bangor Band boasts more than 1,000 years of individual performing experience and 12 college music degrees within its ranks of 35 members. Admission is free and donations are accepted.

National Day of Prayer

The National Day of Prayer will be marked by a time of prayer from noon to 12:30 p.m. Thursday, May 1, at the gazebo in Paul Bunyan Park on Main Street. Call James Lord at 991-9555 for information.

Times of prayer in other towns are at noon at the Hampden Town Office, Brewer City Hall, Winterport Town Office, Hermon Town Office and Folger Library at the University of Maine in Orono.

A prayer walk will be organized at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at the Broadway Park in Bangor and end at the Paul Bunyan Park. For information, call Rebecca Rexrode at 990-5476.

Brewer

Annulment workshop

A marriage annulment workshop is planned for 3 p.m. Sunday, May 4, in the Barry Room at St. Joseph’s Church, 531 North Main St.

The purpose of the session is to better acquaint people with the concept of marriage as taught by the Catholic Church, an overview of the various reasons for and the process used in granting an annulment and to address the myths regarding annulments in the Church. Kiwanis Club

Brewer Fire Chief Rick Bronson was the speaker at a recent Brewer Kiwanis Club meeting. He spoke about the need for a thermal imaging camera. The club has earmarked funds for a camera. Those interested in making donations to the thermal imaging camera fund may do so by sending a check to: Brewer Kiwanis Club, PO Box 538, Brewer ME 04412. Salmon Club breakfast

The Penobscot Salmon Club’s traditional Opening Day Breakfast, a tradition since the late 1800s, will be held 6-9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 26. There will be raffles and door prizes. The Penobscot Salmon Club’s annual raffle will be drawn at approximately 9 a.m.

There will be displays of antique fishing equipment, pictures and artifacts. Many members will bring boats and river craft for viewing.

After breakfast the Penobscot Fly Fishers will hold the annual Fly Fishing Day. There will be classes on equipment, knots and fly casting. The events will be held rain or shine.

The Penobscot Salmon Club is the oldest salmon club, and believed to be the oldest fishing club, in the United States.

Clifton

Prayer time

There will be prayer time to observe the National Day of Prayer at 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, at the Clifton Baptist Church.

Corinth

Angels on Hooves raffle

The Angels on Hooves Therapeutic Riding Program is holding a raffle to benefit the children who are involved in the program. Angels on Hooves deals with children with all types of problems, from overly shy to mentally handicapped children. Raffle prizes are:

. First – Old Town Canoe Company Loon 111 Kayak.

. Second – 100 gallons of fuel donated by Fettinger and Sons Oil.

. Third – Gift certificate for $50 from True Value in Corinth.

. Fourth – Gift certificate for $25 from the Pizza Shoppe in Corinth.

Tickets will be sold in a booth at the Bangor Mall 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Sunday, May 4.

Eddington

Benefit dinner and auction

The Eddington Fire Department Auxiliary is sponsoring a dinner and auction at 5:30 p.m. Friday, May 2, at the Eddington School. The event will benefit the Eddington Fire Department. The cost is $6 and $3 for children ages 3-12.

The auction begins at 7 p.m. Auction items include a dessert per month for a year, car detailing, painting of one ceiling, work done by a bucket or digger truck, yard and cleaning work, and baby-sitting services.

Frankfort

Time of prayer

There will be a time of prayer to mark the National Day of Prayer at 2 p.m. Friday, May 2, at the Frankfort Congregational Church.

Hermon

Help Whip Cancer

The Pampered Chef announced the kickoff of its Help Whip Cancer corporate giving campaign to assist the American Cancer Society in raising awareness and funds for breast cancer early detection programs.

During May, The Pampered Chef will offer special Help Whip Cancer products. The American Cancer Society’s breast cancer early detection and education programs will receive $1 for each purchase made.

Since 2000, The Pampered Chef consultants, hosts and customers have raised more than $1.7 million for breast cancer early detection and education programs through the Help Whip Cancer campaign. Holden

Opportunity to volunteer

Volunteers are needed 5-9:30 p.m. Friday, May 9, to staff a booth and give out Audubon information at the PaddleSmart Safety Symposium.

Volunteers also are needed May and June to lead schoolchildren on wetlands walks. More than 1,000 children and their teachers are anticipated to participate in the tours. Training and observation sessions are provided to volunteers to build confidence in working with children.

In July, volunteers are needed to help children learn about nature camp. Training and observation sessions are provided. To learn more or to volunteer, call Fields Pond Nature Center at 989-2591.

Orono

Sing Americana

The Bangor Area Children’s Choir and Youth Chorale will present Sing Americana at 7 p.m. Friday, May 2, at the Orono United Methodist Church, 26 Oak St. The choir and chorale will perform American Indian songs, American spirituals, swing and jazz tunes, and works by composers Aaron Copland and Rogers and Hammerstein. Michele Hall directs the choir and chorale. Alison Moore is the accompanist. The concert is free, but donations will be accepted at the door.

Hartgen award

The Vincent A. Hartgen Award, given annually by the University of Maine Patrons of Art, will be presented during a program beginning with a cocktail hour at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 26, in the McIntire Room at Buchanan Alumni House, University of Maine.

The award, named for the former UMaine art professor who died last year, is given to a person who has made outstanding contributions to the advancement of the arts in the university community. Hartgen received the first award in 1999. Dennis Cox of the UMaine music faculty received the award in 2000 and Ted and Sandra Leonard received the award last year.

Orrington

Art show

Susan Heinonen Pate of Orrington will show art consisting of black-and-white nature illustrations at the May-June art exhibit at Fields Pond Nature Center in Holden.

Pate has illustrated the children’s books “Stormy, the Storm Petrel,” “Kitty, the Raccoon,” and Beautiful Joe,” and books by Ernest Thompson Seton. Seton’s children’s books include “Redruff,” “The Partridge of Don Valley” and “Ragglyug, a True Story.” She has degrees in art and journalism and has illustrated for newspapers.

Winterport

‘Steel Magnolias’

Winterport Open Stage will present “Steel Magnolias” at 7:30 p.m. Fridays-Saturdays, May 2, 3, 9 and 10, 3 p.m. and Sunday May 11, at Wagner Middle School, Mountainview Drive.

A celebration of friendship, the play is set in Truvy’s beauty salon where anyone who is anybody gets their hair done. Directed by Don Sleight, the cast includes Noelle Bourre, Jodi Miller, Susan Reardon, Ronia Laita, Anne Tatgenhorst and Angela Khorll.
