Woodsmen’s competition highlights logging days

When the bright red word “highest” appears on your e-mail priority list, you might be skeptical about its contents, but this time it was appropriate.

wasn’t,” which means you might not know that Woodsmen’s Day is 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, April 26, rain or shine, at Leonard’s Mills on Route 178 in Bradley.

The annual event features demonstrations and competitions among college woodsmen’s teams, both male and female.

You can see demonstrations of the Lombard log hauler and the facility’s latest acquisition, a display of approximately 25 19th-century axes as well as log-twitching demonstrations, timber hewing and enjoying authentic bean-hole beans.

Admission is $5 for adults, $2 for children age 12 and younger and free for “babes in arms.”

Group admission is $4 per person, but your group must preregister by calling 581-2871. Admission is free for Leonard’s Mills members and volunteers.

If you haven’t visited Leonard’s Mills, you should. You and the kids will enjoy it!

Kathy Walker of Rape Response Services invites you to participate in the fifth annual “Take A Stand Against Sexual Assault” at three locations.

You can participate in the events, which also celebrate the 15th birthday of RRS, 5-6 p.m. Friday, April 25, at Brewer High School, 79 Parkway South; Katahdin Region Higher Education Center, 1 Industrial Drive, East Millinocket; or the Congregational Church in Dover-Foxcroft.

“Lifting the Weight of the War” is a cooperative effort of Union Street Athletics, the Junior League of Bangor and you to lift 1 million pounds as a group to help “ease the weight of the war” for military families.

Participants are collecting sponsorships for their weight-lifting efforts, and all funds raised will benefit local families of deployed troops.

The event is 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at Union Street Athletics, 366 Griffin Road, Bangor.

Liz Peterson of the Hancock County Soil & Water Conservation District will lead a Backyard Conservation Workshop 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, April 26, in the Riverview Room of the Ellsworth Public Library at 20 State St. to kick off Soil Stewardship Week April 27-May 3.

Among things you will learn are which trees and shrubs encourage wildlife, what insects are beneficial, and how to attract your favorite birds.

Members of the East Orrington Congregational Church Manly Men’s Group invite you to attend its third annual Fisherman’s Breakfast 6-9 a.m. Saturday, April 26, at the church, 38 Johnson Mill Road in Orrington.

Admission is $5 per person. Door prizes include golf clubs, heating oil and, of course, a fly rod.

Andrea Stark of the Maine Discovery Museum reminds you “Starship 2040,” the travelling NASA exhibit, is on display 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, April 26, and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, April 27, at the museum in downtown Bangor.

Admission for the special exhibit is included in the general admission.

Visitors may “board” the vehicle and move through its full-sized control, passenger and engineering compartments and experience realistic audio effects, engine noises and computer and crew voices.

Stark reminds readers this is the only visit of this exhibit to our area.

The Volunteer Circle of the Kings Daughters has been affiliated with the First Congregational Church of Brewer since 1891, writes member Betsy Reynolds.

And for 40 years, she added, the group has been “well known in the area” for its “May baskets, fashioned from crepe and tissue paper.”

Those May baskets, along with crafts, knits, food, candy, houseplants and “attic treasures,” will be featured at the organization’s Spring Fair 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at the church, 35 Church St., behind Brewer City Hall.

Proceeds from the event will be donated to charities in Brewer and Bangor.

The Houlton Police All-Stars face the Harlem Court Jesters Comedy Basketball Team at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 26, in the Houlton High School gymnasium.

Tickets are $10 and free for children age 12 and younger.

Tickets are available at the door and tickets from a canceled Jesters appearance in Caribou will be honored at this event.

Proceeds benefit Maine Special Olympics and other HPA programs.
