BANGOR – Joarly Gonzalez is from Venezuela and is currently a graduate student in business at Husson College in Bangor.
But on Sunday, April 26, she will be helping the Husson College International Club celebrate International Day with a fashion and talent show from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Bangor Mall. Students will show clothing from their native countries.
“I enjoy being a member of the International Club because it has given me a chance to learn much about other cultures,” said Gonzalez, who is treasurer of the club. “When I first came to the United States, I had much to learn about how you do things here. By getting to know the other kids in the club, I have also had a chance to learn about behavior, manners and, best of all, food.”
The talent and fashion show will begin at 1 p.m. The club also will have displays from each country represented by its members. Countries represented will be Japan, South Korea, Colombia, Venezuela, Vietnam, United States, Mongolia, Greece and Senegal.
Johanna Cuervo is vice president of the International Club. “Being in the club is good because it helps you get to know more about other cultures. I’ve found out that what means one thing to one person usually will mean something different to a person from a different country. You need to be careful what you say.”
