Brady lifts Bears past Cats in 7th

BURLINGTON Vt. – Jess Brady’s RBI single in the top of the seventh plated pinch-runner Amanda Stevens and provided the UMaine Black Bears with a 2-1 softball victory over the Vermont Catamounts in the opening game of a doubleheader Sunday.

Maine won the second game 8-3.

The Black Bears, now 18-18 overall and 7-7 in America East play, will face Vermont in another doubleheader at 1 p.m. today. Maine was fifth in the America East standings as of Friday with the two Vermont games and two doubleheaders against Hartford remaining on its conference schedule. The top four teams advance to the AE championships May 8-10.

In the first game, Brittany Cheney’s RBI single in the fourth drove in Brady, who reached on a two-out single. Amy Kuhl and Jenna Merchant each hit a double. Merchant scattered seven hits, struck out four, and walked two.

Christine Toomey tripled for Vermont.

In the second game, the Bears scored three runs each in the fourth and fifth to rally for the win. Dulkis knocked in five runs with two doubles. Brady singled twice and added an RBI. Cheney hit a two-run homer and Sarah Bennis allowed seven hits and struck out six in the win.

Mules sweep Trinity

At Waterville Sunday, the Mules clinched a NESCAC tourney birth with a sweep of Trinity, 3-1 in the opener and 8-0 in the nightcap.

In the first game, Annette Caswell knocked in all three runs, knocking a two-run double in the first and adding a sac fly in the third.

In the second game, Toni-Lynn Robbins surrendered only two hits in getting the complete-game shutout victory.

Wendy Bonner and Caswell each double and singled.

USM, Keene State split

At Gorham, Ang Cote scored the game-winning run in the 10th inning to give the University of Southern Maine the 2-1 win over Keene State College in the first game. Kristen Tong doubled with a RBI for the Huskies and Natasha Jackson doubled and singled.

In the second game, Shauna Mullen hit a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh to give Keene State the win.

UMF takes two of three

At Lyndonville, Vt., Lauren Stacey pitched a two-hit shutout to lead the University of Maine-Farmington to a 9-0 win in the first game of a tripleheader.

In the first game, Dorice Reitchel tripled and had two singles to knock in four RBIs for UM-Farmington and Cynthia Ravinski knocked in two while Andrea Benvenuti hit two singles and drove in a in the second game. In the third game, Kristi Cochin hit three singles with a RBI for UMF.

Tufts sweeps Colby

At Waterville, Jon Lee and Randy Newsom each tossed a complete game to lead Tufts to a Saturday sweep of Colby, 5-4 in the first game and 11-5 in the second.

In the opener, Lee only surrendered six hits in earning his eighth win of the season. B.L. Lippert went 2-for-2 with a pair of stolen bases to lead Colby.

In the nightcap, Newsom tossed a seven-hitter as the Jumbos earned the sweep. Brandon Royce led Colby with a home run and double.

Husson takes two from Thomas

At the Winkin Baseball Complex in Bangor, Justin Spencer had a bases-loaded triple in the decisive five-run third-inning rally as the Husson College Braves downed Thomas 7-3 and completed a sweep of their Sunday Sunrise Conference doubleheader.

Husson took over the Sunrise Conference lead from Thomas as the Braves improved to 13-3 in conference play, 19-13 overall. The Terriers fell to 13-5 and 14-16, respectively.

Husson won the opener 4-1.

In the nightcap, Spencer had two triples while Tony Laprino tripled and singled and Craig Harvey contributed a run-scoring triple. Aaron Bonenfant had a double and two singles for Thomas.

In the opener, lefty Craig Harvey spaced 12 hits and stranded nine runners as his mates turned four double plays behind him.

Harvey struck out four and walked one while improving his record to 6-1 and lowering his earned run average to 1.54.

Spencer had an inside-the-park homer in the second and drove in two runs.

Harvey helped his cause with an RBI double.

Ryan O’Connor, Sean Brawn, and Lance Haynes each doubled and singled for Thomas.

USM, Rhode Island split

At Gorham, Adam Lemieux hit two doubles and a single with five RBIs to help the University of Southern Maine to the 8-2 win over Rhode Island College in the first game.

In the first Game, Anthony Pacitto hit a RBI single in the second inning for Southern Maine while Tyler Delorme hit a RBI single in the eighth inning for the Huskies in the second game.

At Lyndonville, Vt., Sunday, Ray Doubleday scattered six hits, struck out 11 and did not give up a walk to lift the Beavers to a 14-3 win in the second game of a doubleheader. Lyndon won the opener 4-3.

In the first game, Travis Carey’s bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 10th drove in the winning run for Lyndon. Tom Ventura doubled and singled for UM-Farmington. James Writer singled twice.

In the second game, Writer homered, doubled and singled to power the Beavers. Justin Quimby added a double and two singles.

St. Joseph’s sweeps Becker

At Standish, Jesse LaCasse drove in six runs with a grand slam and a two-run homer to pace St. Joseph’s 12-hit attack in the nightcap, a 13-6 win. St. Joseph’s won the opener 5-3.

Andy Exley, Nick Mirabello and Jake Rodden also had two hits apiece for the Monks in the second game while Joe DeLuca homered and knocked in three runs for Becker (Mass.).

In the first game, Ben Muniz broke a 3-3 tie with a solo homer in the sixth and Exley singled home an insurance run later in the inning.
