Great Northern Paper Co.’s recent bankruptcy has left the Millinocket area without hundreds of jobs. In its wisdom, the Millinocket Town Council suggested the municipal department budget and the school department budget be cut by 10 percent.

The municipal department bit the bullet and achieved this goal. Apparently the school department didn’t agree and resisted the effort to make the suggested cut. The pressure tactics worked, as council members Gail Fanjoy, Matt Polstein, Avern Danforth and John Davis succeeded in restoring the suggested 10 percent cut to the school department on April 24, in the amount of $250,000. Business as usual in the school department. Shame shame.
