PORTLAND – Justin Headley hit three doubles, scored three runs and drove in two as the Portland Sea Dogs defeated the Reading Phillies 7-1 Monday in the Eastern League.
Jeremy Owens homered and Trace Coquillette homered, doubled and drove in three runs for the Sea Dogs, who had six doubles in all.
Brian Hitchcox drilled three doubles and scored Reading’s lone run.
Headley doubled and scored as Portland (8-8) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Phillies (8-14) answered in the third when Hitchcox doubled and scored.
Owens’ homer gave the Sea Dogs a 2-1 lead in the fourth, and Portland added one in the fifth when Headley and Coquillette doubled.
After Headley’s two-run double and Kelly Shoppach’s RBI double made it 6-1 in the sixth, Coquillette’s homer closed the scoring in the seventh.
Portland starter Jorge De La Rosa struck out four, walked three and gave up one run on eight hits over five innings to even his record at 2-2.
