Two teenagers received summonses in Veazie recently after accidentally setting a lawn on fire.

Veazie police Officer Ryan Welch went to a Veazie Street address at about 5:20 p.m. Friday in response to a 911 hang-up. He found the lawn on fire, with two boys frantically trying to put out the flames with water carried in trash cans. Welch used his dry chemical extinguisher and helped the boys quell the fire.

The boys told Welch they were setting small items on fire in a small pit, with the help of a can of gasoline. When the gas can caught fire, one of them threw it and it ignited the lawn.

Veazie Fire Department came and doused the lawn to prevent a hot spot from re-igniting.

On the advice of Veazie police Cpl. Andrew Whitehouse, an arson investigator, Welch summoned both boys for burning without a permit. One of the boys reportedly said he would “never touch fire again.”

An Indian Island man allegedly threatened to kill his ex-girlfriend Sunday evening.

A woman who works at the Irving Mainway store in Orono called Orono police Sgt. Gary Duquette and Officer Josh Ewing at about 7:15 p.m. saying she received a phone call from her ex-boyfriend, Mark Mitchell, 43, who said he was going to kill her.

The officers went to Indian Island and, with the help of Indian Island police Officer Jim Fearon, arrested Mitchell for alleged terrorizing.

Duquette said Mitchell was very cooperative. He was taken to Penobscot County Jail.

Bangor police arrested a woman Sunday night for allegedly operating under the influence of intoxicants.

Officer Steve Jordan said he was on Hammond Street at about 10:15 p.m. when he noticed a car ahead of him stop near Franklin Street and then start again when the light changed at the intersection a block away.

Jordan said he stopped the car on State Street near the bridge.

Jordan said the driver, Valerie Dennison, 45, of Bangor, had difficulty opening her car door, and swayed as he gave her a gaze test.

Jordan said Dennison told him she had two jumbo margaritas with dinner.

Jordan said he did not give a balance test because Dennison was wearing heels. When he asked if she could feel the effects of alcohol, Dennison told him she was “starting to.”

Jordan arrested Dennison and took her to Penobscot County Jail. He said she was cooperative, and that her blood-alcohol level tested at 0.27 percent.
