Hackett helps pace Bangor by Nokomis Derosa a relief as Rams remain unbeaten

NEWPORT – Different day, different story, but same result.

The Bangor baseball team opened its season last Friday with a 17-0 drubbing of Nokomis. In that game, the Warriors kicked the ball around to the tune of six errors.

Tuesday afternoon the Warriors played better defense but the Rams were just too tough and came away with a 5-3 win.

Sophomore Brian Hackett started on the mound for the Rams and allowed just a squib hit, a slow roller to second off the bat of Nokomis’ Ben Davis, in three innings of work.

His teammates jumped on Nokomis starter Ed Jacques for two runs in the first inning.

Leadoff hitter Nate Hall and Nick Larochelle started things with consecutive infield singles. One out later junior Josh Young slammed a ball into left-center just out of Davis’ reach. Hall scored on the play.

Hackett then doubled down the right-field line, scoring Larochelle. The Rams might have done more damage but first baseman Jody Mullis took the throw from right fielder Alex Sawyer and fired to catcher Justin Nichols to nail Young at the plate. Nichols then threw to third to get Hackett, who tried to move up on the throw home.

The 3-0 Rams added three more runs in the fifth inning.

Senior Josh Heath tagged a one-out, pinch-hit single to left. Brian Worster re-entered the game to run for Heath, stole second and scored on a Hackett single. Senior Catcher P.J. Dowe drove in Hackett with a single to right.

Hackett moved to third base in the fourth, giving way to senior Steve Fergerson. Hackett was equally impressive there, making a sterling play on a slow roller to get the Warriors’ Seth Bradstreet.

“I was thinking about letting it go foul but coach said to be aggressive, so I made the play and threw him out,” Hackett said.

Sophomore Anthony Derosa came on to pitch for the Rams in the fifth inning and ran into almost immediate trouble.

Sawyer singled to lead off the inning and scored one out later when Mullis singled to center after fighting off a couple of tough two-strike pitches.

The 1-2 Warriors added two more runs in the sixth after two were out. Josh Vile walked, Bradstreet singled to left and Vile scored on a single to left by Davis. Sawyer drove in Bradstreet with a single up the middle.

But Derosa turned in a strong seventh inning, setting the Warriors down in order.

“My teammates were just helping me in the dugout, you know, getting my demeanor up. It just felt good going into the final inning,” Anthony Derosa.

Nokomis coach Gene Crockett liked the way his team fought back from Friday’s loss.

“I think they showed a lot of character coming back today,” Crockett said.
