WATERVILLE – Jenna Merchant and Sarah Bennis combined on a three-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts between them as the University of Maine softball team prevailed over Colby 6-0 Wednesday afternoon.

Dana Grimm jacked a solo homer for the Black Bears, and Brittany Cheney added a two-run single.

Wendy Bonner, Emily Allen, and Meaghan Shea had a single apiece for the White Mules.

Huskies sweep Bobcats

At Gorham, the Huskies’ pitchers allowed only one run on nine hits in two games to earn a sweep of Bates College, 5-1 in the opener and 6-0 in the nightcap.

In the first game, Melissa Henderson scattered five hits and struck out five to pick up her 11th win of the year.

The Huskies broke it open in the sixth with five runs, keyed by a two-run, bases loaded double by Natasha Jackson. Sarah McLean had an RBI single in the inning, and Kristen Tong led it off with a triple.

Cami Dyson doubled for the Bobcats of Lewiston in the seventh and scored on a Krissie Whiting single.

In the second game, the Huskies scored single runs in the first two innings, giving Katie Mainville all the support she’d need. She gave up only four hits.

Jordan Gatcomb roped a solo homer for the Huskies. Tong had three singles and scored two runs, and Renee Heath collected two singles and three RBIs.

Dyson smacked a pair of doubles for Bates.

At Winkin Baseball Complex in Bangor, Tom McMahon hit a home run and a double with two RBIs to spark the Polar Bears’ win.

Justin King homered and singled with two RBIs for Bowdoin of Brunswick. Jimmy Shead hit a double and two singles, and Ivan Lucuk had a double and a single.

Jason Harvey doubled and singled for Husson, and Justin Spencer hit a pair of singles.

Owen Miehe hit a pair of singles for Bates of Lewiston.

Scott Brown cracked a solo homer and a single to lead the Terriers. Aaron Bonenfant tripled and singled, and Corey Pelletier knocked a double and a single.
