UMaine thumps Crusaders Bears get triple play against Holy Cross

SANFORD – Four Maine pitchers combined on a six-hitter and four Black Bears each drove in two runs as they pounded the Holy Cross Crusaders 11-1 at Goodall Park Wednesday.

Maine also pulled off a rare triple play in the third inning. With Crusaders on first and second, third baseman Joe Drapeau fielded a Tucker Frawley grounder, stepped on third, threw to second baseman Brett Ouellette, who notched the second out and threw to first baseman Jesse Carlton for the third out.

Ryan Harris started for the Bears and pitched two hitless, shutout innings before being relieved by Sam Warner, who went four innings while giving up four hits and the Holy Cross run. Brett Rogers followed with two hitless innings and Ryan Foley recorded the three final outs while giving up two hits.

Alain Picard, Drapeau, Brett Ouellette, and Jason Houser each drove in two runs for Maine. Drapeau followed up his strong weekend with another solid performance as he slammed a two-run double in Maine’s five-run second inning.

Mike Livulpi, Carlton, and Picard each added an RBI single in the second.

The Black Bears added two more runs in the fifth on Ouellette’s eighth home run of the season and another two in the next inning on Houser’s single to left.

Maine opened the scoring with a run in the first when Simon Williams scored on a Picard fielder’s choice grounder. Williams had singled and advanced on an Aaron Izaryk single. The Bears added their final run in the eighth when Greg Creek singled home Aaron Young.

Mike Marron singled twice for Holy Cross and Mike Schell had a run-scoring single in the sixth.

Maine, which improved to 28-11, returns to America East play this weekend when it travels to New York for two doubleheaders against Albany.
