Nick Henry has signed on the dotted line.

The basketball standout for Blue Hill’s George Stevens Academy has committed to attend Husson College in Bangor, where he will play for the Braves while studying accounting.

“The location of the school, being close to home and still somewhat far away; the personnel from the coaches to the teachers, and the academic program,” Henry said when asked what sold him on Husson.

The 6-foot-4 forward and captain who led his Eagles to the Class C state basketball championship brings a lot of postseason and championship game experience to Husson. The fact that Henry has played in three regional finals (two each in baseball, soccer and basketball) didn’t escape the notice of veteran Husson coach Warren Caruso.

“I think he has a great upside,” Caruso said. “You look at what they’ve done at GSA … It seems like they’ve either played in at least one [regional] final in one or more sports for seven of the last nine seasons.”

Henry, who averaged 21 points, 10 rebounds, and four assists in postseason play, also plays soccer and baseball at GSA and is a member of the Penobscot Valley Conference All-Academic Team.

Henry joins Winslow forward Micah Grant, Penobscot Valley of Howland forward Matt Mulligan, and Nokomis of Newport grad Jeff White, who transferred from the University of Southern Maine this spring, to form Husson’s incoming “recruiting” class.

“There’s a half dozen guys in the state we’ve targeted and we have three of them, plus we’ve got another guy back in the fold that we targeted a couple years ago, so I’m excited about our future,” Caruso said.

Rebounding record

It’s now official, according to the final NCAA statistics released on April 28.

Clinton’s Jed Johnson, a senior at Maine Maritime Academy, finished the 2002-03 collegiate basketball season as the nation’s top rebounder in the NCAA Division III ranks.

The 6-foot-7 center averaged 16.6 rebounds per game en route to 414 on the season. He also averaged 22.4 points a game. Johnson became the first player in MMA history to surpass the 1,000 mark in both career points (1,618) and rebounds (1,155).
