PORTLAND – Juan Richardson hit a three-run homer as the Reading Phillies scored all their runs in the first inning en route to a 4-3 victory over the Portland Sea Dogs on Thursday in the Eastern League.
The win snapped Reading’s four-game losing streak and averted a Sea Dogs sweep of the four-game series.
The Phillies (9-16) got their first run when Jeff Inglin doubled home Anderson Machado. After Aaron McNeal reached base on an error, Richardson’s shot over the right-field wall made it 4-0.
Portland (10-9) narrowed the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the first on a two-run double by Justin Sherrod. The Sea Dogs closed out the scoring on Andy Schrager’s RBI double in the ninth.
Winning pitcher Taylor Buchholz (3-1) gave up two runs and six hits over six innings while striking out eight and walking two. Yoel Hernandez pitched the ninth and picked up his first save.
Eric Glaser (1-1) settled down after the first inning and retired the next 11 Phillies before giving way to a reliever in the sixth.
