Freedom isn’t free. This is a phrase you see occasionally, usually on the vehicle of a veteran, who knows what it means.
Walk in the shoes of the military serviceman or woman and you will appreciate the meaning of this catch phrase. From the first struggle for independence, through the Civil War, World Wars I and II, Korea, Vietnam, and Desert Storm and the skirmishes in Grenada, Somalia, Kosovo and Bosnia, the military service member has put their life on the line to help a poorer nation or protect our national security. They do it without question because that is their job. They are well-trained, educated, knowledgeable and dedicated to their branch of service and the United States of America.
They don’t ask for anything in return, only to be able to walk down the streets of America with their head high knowing that they did what was asked of them by their commander in chief. There is nothing more humble than having to commit soldiers to battle. There is nothing more humiliating than to return from battle to be degraded, harassed or spit on, knowing that you put your life on the line for those same people.
Regardless of your beliefs, our soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen deserve your support for doing what is asked of them whenever they are needed. I salute all members of the armed forces and wish them godspeed and a safe return.
