Moro Plantation
Nearly 20 voters in this community of 43 residents have approved a budget of $66,370 to run their town and to pay for education.
The annual town meeting and elections were held Monday at the home of Carroll Gerow, first selectman, and his wife, Deanna Gerow, town clerk.
During the two-hour session, $39,881 was budgeted for education, increasing the amount voters raised by nearly $2,000 over last year.
The town of Patten provides fire protection at $2,790 and ambulance service for $1,089.
The plantation’s tax rate is $15.40 per $1,000 in property valuation.
There is a possibility the tax rate could go up a little when all the bills are in, Carroll Gerow said Friday.
Incumbents were re-elected to office. They were Carroll Gerow, first selectman; Edward George, second selectman; Charles Loucka, third selectman; Deanna Gerow and Jeannine Cyr, school committee; Deanna Gerow, town clerk; Charlotte George, tax collector; and Will George, constable.
Ludlow
With a 33-15 vote, Barry Ivey unseated incumbent Joyce Folsom for a three-year term on the Board of Selectmen.
At the annual polls Monday, incumbent Karen Beaulieu was re-elected unopposed to the position of town clerk.
Approximately 20 voters attended the 30-minute town meeting Monday and adopted a $163,634 municipal budget, up $2,400 from a year ago.
Part of the increase supported higher anticipated costs associated with maintenance of winter roads, budgeted at $62,000 last year. The actual cost won’t be known until contracts are settled for snowplowing and purchases of salt and sand supplies.
Voters also raised $2,500 in matching funds for a grant to prepare a comprehensive plan for the town. The town has reapplied for the grant after being turned down in the last round.
The sum of $20,000 remained the same for maintenance of summer roads.
With the $2,000 approved by voters, the town will purchase two so-called “dry” hydrants to draw water from ponds in the winter to extinguish fires as needed.
The contract with the town of Houlton for fire protection was up about $90 to a total of $12,425.
The cost for ambulance service, also provided by Houlton, dropped $860 to $6,999.
With a balance on hand from last year’s general government expenditures, voters reduced that account from $32,000 to $30,000.
They also raised $200 for the Soil and Water District; $212 for the Aroostook Area Agency on Aging; $86 for the Aroostook County Action Program; and $90 for Southern Aroostook Homemakers Service.
Town officials won’t know for a few weeks what they will have to pay for education and county taxes.
