BANGOR – A few well-placed and timely hits, along with a few well-thrown Sarah DeFilipp changeups, were all the Brewer softball team needed to best cross-river rival Bangor Monday afternoon.
DeFilipp struck out 12 Ram batters, scattered four hits and walked one to lead the Witches to a 7-1 victory at the Union Street complex.
Brewer goes to 3-1 and Bangor falls to 2-2.
The two teams, who meet again Thursday at 7 p.m. at Brewer’s Coffin Field, always get geared up for each other. The Witches were even more up for Bangor after losing 5-1 to Nokomis of Newport Saturday.
“I think we were just really pumped for this game,” said Brewer senior Amy Freeman, who singled and scored two runs. “You know, it’s Bangor-Brewer.”
DeFilipp gave up a one-out single to Steph Chase in the bottom of the first inning, then retired 15 in a row before issuing a walk in the bottom of the sixth.
DeFilipp mixed her changeup in with a curve and a fastball.
“We knew they had good hitters and they’re a strong team,” she said. “I warmed up a little more for this game than other games. I felt more confident. [The changeup] was working today.”
Bangor coach Nancy Snowdeal said the youthful Rams hadn’t faced that kind of pitching yet this year.
“Sarah was definitely on today,” she said. “Any amount of practice doesn’t prepare you for game situations. She definitely had us fooled. And her other pitches were pretty effective.”
DeFilipp also singled, scored a run and knocked one in on a sacrifice fly.
The Witches went in order in the first two innings but got to Bangor starter Jen Dall in the third. Anna Corey hit a one-out single, stole second and third, and scored on an error that put Kate Hanlon at first. She advanced to second on a Freeman single and got to third on a DeFilipp groundout that put Freeman at second.
Caroline McAvoy singled to center field, driving in Hanlon and Freeman.
Vanessa Michaud doubled to plate Emily McLaughlin in the fourth. Christine Thoms drove in DeFilipp, who singled and stole second and third, in the seventh.
“Against Nokomis we didn’t hit anything,” Freeman said. “Today we needed to hit the gaps, make them make errors.”
The Rams put a run across in the bottom of the seventh when Heidi Baker led off with a single and scored on a Megan McCrum triple. After McCrum was tagged out at home plate trying to score on a Kate Turner fielder’s choice, DeFilipp got two strikeouts to end the game.
“This is a good wakeup call for us because we’ve been relying too much on our bats,” Snowdeal said.
Dall, a sophomore, started the game for Bangor but left in the fifth after Freeman slammed a ball into right field and got all the way to third on an error. Freshman Kelly White gave up one hit and one run while striking out five and walking two in three innings.
