U.S. Cellular assistance

U.S. Cellular is increasing its commitment to helping the homeless through its Opportunity Calls program by donating two wireless voice mailboxes to the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter.

Access to a wireless voice mailbox gives those involved in the Opportunity Calls program a private place for prospective employers, landlords and caseworkers to leave messages.

“Because the wireless voice mailbox has a regular seven-digit phone number and a personalized greeting, the callers never know they have reached a voice mailbox,” said Debra Boyd, U.S. Cellular area sales manager. “By keeping the homeless connected with people who could make a difference in their lives, this program is a step toward ending the cycle of homelessness.”

The voice mailboxes are accessible 24 hours a day from any touch-tone telephone. Bangor Area Homeless Shelter will assign the U.S. Cellular voice mailboxes to participants on a prioritized need basis.

“The Opportunity Calls program gives homeless and disadvantaged individuals a chance to maintain their dignity while they are trying to improve their lives,” said Michael Andrick, program manager at the shelter.
