Cervenak slams Sea Dogs

NORWICH, Conn. – Mike Cervenak had three hits and drove in five runs as the Norwich Navigators beat the Portland Sea Dogs 8-5 in the Eastern League Wednesday morning.

Cervenak hit a grand slam in the first inning, had an RBI single in the second and added a single in the sixth.

Carlos Mendoza added two hits and two RBIs for Norwich (14-16), which salvaged one win of the three-game series.

Adam Shabala, Marco Pernalete, Doug Clark, Carlos Valderrama, and Jamie Athas finished with two hits for the Navigators.

Noah Lowry (3-1) picked up the win, allowing three runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out six.

Matt Montgomery pitched a perfect ninth inning for his seventh save.

Junior Herndon (1-2) took the loss. He gave up seven runs on 11 hits in five innings.

John Nathans had two hits for Portland (14-11).

Kevin Haverbusch had a two-run single in the fourth inning and Andy Dominique had an RBI double in the sixth and a sacrifice fly in the seventh for the Sea Dogs.

Portland left the bases loaded in the seventh inning when Norwich’s R.D. Spiehs struck out Haverbusch to end the inning and preserve a 7-5 lead.
