PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Melissa Henderson fired her second career one-hitter and Kristi Steward knocked in the game’s lone run Wednesday afternoon in the fourth inning as the University of Southern Maine softball team nipped Rhode Island College 1-0 in an ECAC tournament first-round game.
Southern Maine advances to this weekend’s four-team double elimination round, where they’ll battle Springfield College in Springfield, Mass.
Renee Heath kicked off the rally with a one-out single. Sarah McLean followed with a single. After the next batter struck out, Steward’s single up the middle scored Heath.
Henderson took a no-hitter into the sixth inning for Southern Maine. She finished with five strikeouts and one walk.
Kim Warrington fanned 11 for the Anchorwomen.

At Mansfield, Conn., senior Paul Tedesco drove in two runs with a double to give Southern Maine the edge over Western Connecticut in a Little East Conference first-round matchup.
The Huskies will play the winner of the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth and Keene State game tonight at 7 p.m.
Brian Marshall contributed with an RBI double.
Chris Sudano had two doubles and an RBI for Western Connecticut.
