Lindgren pitches Danes past Bears

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Andrea Lindgren tossed a three-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and no walks to lead No. 2 Albany past No. 3 Maine in the first round of the America East softball tournament.

The Black Bears, now 25-21, will face No. 4 Stony Brook in an elimination game at 1:30 p.m. today.

Defending champion Boston University topped the Seawolves 2-0 in a first-round game Thursday afternoon. BU and Albany (33-8) will play in the winner’s bracket game Friday morning.

The Great Danes scored in the bottom of the second inning when junior Liz Wieboldt tripled down the right field line, and came home on a Maine throwing error. Lindgren, the America East Pitcher of the Year, goes to 19-4.

Jess Brady of Jackman, Jenna Merchant and Berwick’s Lindsay Tibbetts each singled for the Black Bears. None of Maine’s four baserunners (Brittany Cheney was hit by a Lindgren pitch in the first inning) advanced beyond first.

Merchant (14-9) gave up five hits, struck out four and walked one.

Maine swept Stony Brook in a pair of doubleheaders April 12-13.
