STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The University of Maine softball team won its first game Friday, but was later eliminated from the America East Championship.
The Black Bears stayed alive in the early game with a 5-2 victory over host Stony Brook, but UMaine pitching ran out of gas as top-seeded Boston University ousted UMaine 19-6 in a game called after five innings by the 10-run rule.
In the afternoon game, the Terriers took advantage of 11 walks and four errors while eliminating the Bears, who finished the season 26-22. BU set seven tournament records, including runs (19), doubles (5) and home runs (3).
BU scored five runs in the first inning, then piled on seven in the third and sixth in the fourth. Jennifer Shields knocked in six runs with two homers, including a grand slam, to lead the Terriers.
Dana Grimm hit a solo homer and two singles for the Bears.
In the opener, UMaine scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to knock Stony Brook out of the tournament.
Brittany Cheney’s two-run homer highlighted the uprising for the Bears, who also got a sacrifice fly from Jessica Brady. Cheney also singled for the winners.
Winning pitcher Jenna Merchant scattered seven hits and singled twice.
Jane Stein homered and singled for the Seawolves.

Wilmington wins championship
At Stony Brook, N.Y., the University of Maine-Farmington advanced to the championship game by beating Holy Family 4-2 in game five, but was defeated in the championship game 4-3 by Wilmington College.
In game five, Cynthia Ravinski had two hits with three RBIs to lead UM-Farmington past Holy Family. Pitcher Lauren Stacey picked up the win.
In the championship game, the Wilmington Wildcats came back from a 2-3 deficit and scored two runs in the sixth inning to give them the victory. Pitcher Kim Helm earned the win.
Ravinski had two RBIs for the Beavers, who end their season at 20-14.

Wilmington wins Region 10 title
At Waterville, Tom Gallagher pitched a three-hitter, striking out three and walking two, as Wilmington College (Del.) blanked Thomas to sweep Friday’s doubleheader and advance in NAIA Tournament play.
Wilmington rallied for a 4-3 win in the opener of their best-of-three NAIA Region 10 series.
Gallagher received the only run he would need in the first on Aaron Lewis’ double and Jim Murphy’s RBI single. Lewis made it 2-0 in the third when he singled, stole second on an attempted pickoff, moved to third on an error and scored a groundout.
Lewis had a double and two singles and scored three runs, Murphy had two singles and an RBI, Pete Henyan doubled and singled, and Kevin Murphy doubled and singled for the winners.
Lance Haynes had two singles for Thomas and Corey Pelletier had the other.
In the opener, Wilmington erased a 3-1 deficit with three runs in the eighth on Bryan Fitzgerald’s single, back-to-back infield errors and RBI singles by Brian Fulcher and Ryan Husfelt.
Fitzgerald had three singles for Wilmington and Fulcher had two.
Haynes and Jordan Stebbins had RBI singles for Thomas and Jordan McDonald had a sacrifice fly.

At Mansfield, Conn., Joey Serfass pitched a three-hit shutout as the Warriors beat the Huskies in the Little East Conference tournament.
Southern Maine faces UMass Dartmouth today at noon for the right to meet Eastern Connecticut in the 4 p.m. championship contest.
Serfass struck out five and did not walk a batter. Eugene Julien led the Warriors with a double, two singles and three RBIS.
Adam Lemieux doubled for the Huskies.
