Duplicate catalogs

Congratulations to Nadine Jones and the first-grade children in Room 9 at 14th Street School in Bangor for their efforts to stop the flow of multiple copies of catalogs (BDN, April 30). You can make a difference.

Our small public library was being overrun with book, video and audio catalogs, sometimes receiving multiple copies at a time. We were tired of taking all this waste to the transfer station.

We made up a form letter stating that we had never purchased from them and why we wouldn’t be able to in the future, suggesting that they might prefer to remove our library from their mailing list, saving themselves from the cost of printing and mailing. We cut out the labels and attached them to the letter. Then we kept a list of those sent so we could check to see if we continued to receive them.

Since the first of the year we have received 95 different catalogs. To date we are still receiving copies from only 14 of the 95 companies.
