UM earns spot in playoffs Harris sparks Bears

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Ryan Harris gave up just one hit in six innings, striking out seven and allowing no runs, as the University of Maine baseball team picked up a 2-0 victory over Stony Brook, sweeping a Sunday doubleheader and taking three of four from the Seawolves over the weekend.

The 35-14 Black Bears, now 15-5 in America East play, won Sunday’s first game 4-1 and took Saturday’s second game 9-5. Stony Brook (26-19, 11-9) won Saturday’s opener 8-6.

Maine has clinched a spot in the four-team America East Tournament, scheduled May 22-24 at Burlington, Vt. The Bears have slipped percentage points behind league leader Vermont (13-3), with the two scheduled for a four-game series Friday and Saturday at Mahaney Diamond in Orono.

On Sunday, Maine pitchers combined to limit the Seawolves to five hits in the two Sunday games. In the second game, Harris was impressive in his longest outing since the southern trip.

The junior righthander, who was sidelined for more than a month with an elbow problem, appears to be rounding back into shape. He walked only two.

Maine’s Joe Hough singled and drove in Joe Drapeau in the top of the fourth inning and Brett Ouellette homered to left in the sixth, providing the Bears with all the offense they would need with Harris on the mound.

Jesse Carlton hit two doubles for Maine. Ouellette also singled, as did Drapeau.

Greg Creek of Chelsea picked up his second save with one inning of hitless relief.

Stony Brook’s Matt Restivo allowed two runs on five hits and struck out five in the loss.

In Sunday’s first game, Mike Livulpi and Ouellette each hit an RBI single and Aaron Izaryk had an RBI double in Maine’s three-run fifth inning. Drapeau singled in the first, driving in Simon Williams for an early lead.

Stony Brook got a run back in the fifth when Andrew Larsen scored on a Jim McCurdy single.

Williams and Livulpi each finished with two singles for the Black Bears. Mike MacDonald of Camden earned a complete-game victory, striking out nine and allowing four hits.

Garrett Renner and Andrew Larsen each hit a double for the Seawolves.

In Saturday’s first game, Renner’s two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth won it for the Seawolves.

Creek hit a two-run single and a two-run homer, and Ryan Quintal had an RBI double to help give Maine an early lead. Stony Brook’s Ed Kull hit an RBI double and McCurdy added an RBI single to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, setting up Renner’s winning hit in the eighth.

Restivo picked up the win for Stony Brook. Maine’s Adam Labelle took the loss in a relief appearance.

In Saturday’s second game, Pat Tobin homered twice and finished with four RBIs to lead Maine. The Black Bears hit four home runs in the game.

Maine took control in the bottom of the fourth when Mike Ferriggi and Ryan Quintal hit back-to-back solo homers to go up 3-1.

Stony Brook would get one back in the fifth, but the Bears blew the game open in the top of the sixth with a three-run shot by Tobin that scored Williams and Izaryk. They would add two more in the sixth with a Creek single that brought in Livulpi and Ouellette and another in the seventh with a solo homer by Tobin.

Greg Norton (6-1) scattered nine hits and nine walks to pick up the win.

Renner doubled and singled.
