RAYMOND – Police are investigating the cause of a head-on collision on Route 85 that killed an elderly couple and critically injured another relative.

Hazen Spearin, 82, of Gray was driving a minivan Sunday that collided with a pickup truck, authorities said.

Spearin and his 77-year-old wife, Blanche, both died in the accident.

Hazen Spearin’s 71-year-old sister, Elizabeth Worthen, was listed in critical condition Monday at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

The pickup truck’s driver, Richard Cormier, 48, of Gray, and suffered minor injuries and was released from Maine Medical Center, as was his son.

Cumberland County Sheriff’s Detective William Rhoads said that Spearin was traveling north and Cormier was driving south at a gentle curve when the accident happened.

“It appears that someone crossed over the line,” Rhoads said.

“The vehicles collided head-on and wound up in the ditch on the southbound side of the road.”
