N.H. crash fugitive arrested in Maine

SOUTH BERWICK – The mother of a boy who was injured and abandoned in a Farmington, N.H., car crash helped catch the driver, who was her boyfriend, police said.

Police in South Berwick arrested Robert Hurlburt, 50, on Thursday night. He faces charges of driving while intoxicated and endangering the welfare of a child.

Hurlburt is accused of leaving Jason Chick, 15, in the wreckage after he crashed a car earlier this month. A Farmington woman stopped and called for help. Police picked up Hurlburt that night, but released him after he gave them a false name, police said.

Chick’s mother sent a love letter with a promise of money to Hurlburt, who was being sought by police. He called and asked her to meet him in South Berwick, she said. She contacted police, and Hurlburt was arrested when he showed up for the meeting.

Jason is recovering from a broken leg and other injuries.
