HAMPDEN – The Bangor baseball team showed that it has the ability to come from behind and has the pitching to shut down its opponents in a doubleheader sweep of Hampden Academy Saturday afternoon at Bordick Park.
The Rams finally figured out the puzzle Hampden pitcher Pat Moran posed to them for the first six innings of the first game with six runs in the seventh to beat the Broncos 6-3.
Then, Bangor pitcher Anthony Derosa shut down the 4-6 Broncos in the second game, allowing only three hits over six innings as 9-1 Bangor earned a 6-0 win.
In the first game, Moran appeared to be in cruise control. Through six innings he had allowed only four hits and had shown no signs of weakening.
But the seventh inning turned out to be a nightmare for the Broncos.
The Rams sent 10 batters to the plate in the inning and had suddenly figured out the hard-throwing righthander.
Mike Prentiss and P.J. Dowe began the inning with singles. Pinch hitter Jessefa Murphy drew a walk. One out later Jordan Heath singled to drive in Prentiss. Brian Hackett then laced a two-out double to right-center field to score Dowe and pinch runner Aaron Gallant and Bangor had a 4-3 lead.
Josh Young followed with his second hit of the game, a single that scored Hackett with the fifth run. Ryan Toomey, who ran for Young, came in to score on Andy Treadwell’s single to left.
“I think it was just the fact that we’d seen him a couple of times, all of us, we had time to time him up. When it came, in the clutch, we realized we could hit him,” Young said.
Moran entered the inning having a comfortable pitch count of 82. But the sophomore threw 40 pitches in the seventh inning before giving way to Billy Shannon, who struck out Prentiss to end the carnage.
“They got a nubber up the middle that falls through, a couple of unfortunate walks, and the next thing you know it’s 3-3 and we’re in trouble,” Hampden coach Marc Halsted said.
Prentiss had two singles for the Rams.
Kyle Dalton singled three times and drove in a run while Blaine Meehan had a pair of singles and an RBI and played a steady shortstop for Hampden.
Mike Larochelle picked up the win in relief of Brian Hackett. Steve Fergerson pitched the seventh inning to earn a save.
In the second game, Derosa cruised, striking out eight while walking three. The sophomore held the Broncos at bay using a fastball and a biting curve.
Just one Hampden Academy player reached third base in the game.
“The curveball felt really good today actually. I just felt I could snap it off,” Derosa said.
Meanwhile, the Rams’ offense chipped away at Dalton, who went the distance for the Broncos.
Heath led off the game with a double and scored on Hackett’s grounder to short one out later.
Bangor scored three more runs in the second with Treadwell and Dowe picking up runs batted in and Nick Larochelle and T.J. Tracy picked up RBIs with base hits.
“We always have confidence in our hitting. I mean that’s one thing that we do have and can rely on. One through nine we probably have the strongest batting lineup in the league,” Young said.
Derosa also had a solid defense playing behind him, particular Heath at shortstop. Heath took a hit away from Shannon in the second inning when he went to the hole, backhanded Shannon’s grounder, and nipped him at first base.
Brooks, Dalton, and Moran had the Hampden hits.
“We’re certainly a team that needs to compete a little better,” Halsted said. “Every pitcher we face is tough. But we’ve got to do better than three hits and no runs in the second half of a doubleheader on a Saturday afternoon.”
