State science fair gives students chance to shine

AUGUSTA – More than 80 high school students received awards at the 57th Annual Maine State Science and Technology Fair on May 10 at the University of Maine.

The Maine Principals Association sponsored the event in partnership with National Semiconductor and Fairchild Semiconductor in South Portland and the University of Maine College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the College of Natural Sciences, Forestry and Agriculture.

The association awarded plaques to the schools whose students took first place in the Talks and Demonstrations and Exhibits categories. First-place and second-place winners in the Talks and Demonstrations categories were awarded U.S. Savings Bonds funded by National Semiconductor and Fairchild Semiconductor. First-place winners in Talks and Demonstrations also received a total of $4,000 in scholarships from the University of Maine.

A number of special prizes also were awarded. Roby Moulton from Mt. Ararat High School in Topsham, Mike Hennessey from Mt. Ararat, Morgan MacLeod from Greely High School in Cumberland, and Tamlyn Frederick from Foxcroft Academy received $50 recognition awards from the U.S. Navy. Nathaniel Foss from Madison Area Memorial High School received a graphing calculator from Maine School of Science and Mathematics.

The Talks and Demonstrations Division required students to experiment or manipulate data in a new way and then present it to the judges. Winners in this division were:

Grades 11-12 Physical Science – First place, Amanda Kahl, Penquis Valley; and second place, Robert Eliason, Greely.

Grades 11-12 Biology- First place, Ali Harding, Mt. Ararat; second place, Sean Turner, Mt. Ararat; third place, Kari Lynn Cummings, Bangor Christian Schools.

Grades 9-12 Institutionally Aided – First place, Katie Boynton, Medomak Valley; second place, Danielle Phinney, Mt. Ararat; third place, Stephen Turgeon, Bangor Christian.

Grades 9-12 Technology – First place, Nathaniel Foss, Madison; second place, Matt Miller, Madison; third place, Shane Murphy, Bangor Christian.

Grades 9-10 Psychology – First place, Kimberly Spaulding, Bangor Christian; second place, Kristina Caldwell, Bangor Christian; third place, Randy Savage, Madison.

Grades 9-10 Physics – First place, Morgan MacLeod, Greely; second place, Tamlyn Frederick, Foxcroft Academy; third place, Rachel Seigmund, Greely.

Grades 9-10 Environmental/Earth Science – First place, Haven Leeming, Greely; second place, Alyssa Robinson, Foxcroft Academy; third place, Christie Rogers, Mt. Ararat.

Grades 9-10 Chemistry – First place, Roby Moulton, Mt. Ararat; second place, Mike Hennessey, Mt. Ararat; third place, Andrew Pomeroy, Foxcroft Academy.

Grades 9-10 Consumer – First place, Stephanie Chinnapongse, Mt. Ararat; second place, Morgan Harris, Greely; third place, Lindsay Sasso, Mt. Ararat.

Grades 9-10 Zoology – First place, Emily Tupper, Mt. Ararat; second place, Melissa Macalister, Foxcroft Academy; third place, Erica Kaufmann, Foxcroft Academy.

Grades 9-10 Botany – First place, Jen Howard, Greely; second place, Jessica Caldwell, Mt. Ararat; third place, Rolinda Mitchell, Foxcroft Academy.

In the Exhibits Division, students displayed evidence of scientific experimentation or application of technological principles. Winners in the exhibit categories were:

Grades 11-12 Physical Science – First place, Kim Wironen, Mt. Ararat; second place, Daniel Richter, Chop Point School; third place, Jessica Lipofsky, Oak Hill High School.

Grades 11-12 Biological Science – First place, Vanessa Layton, Bangor Christian; second place, Matthew DuBois, Bangor Christian; third place, Amanda Colson, Bangor Christian.

Grades 9-12 Team Physical Science – First place, Amanda Hoffman and Sarah Waite, Mt. Ararat; second place, Christopher Bean and Shelley Blake, Bangor Christian; third place, Jacob Callnon and Timothy Bossie, Houlton High School.

Grades 9-12 Team Psychology/Consumer – First place, Ellen London and Sam Waite, Mt. Ararat; second place, Deena Metzler and Amanda Ramirez, Mt. Ararat; third place, Kaitlyn French and Meredith French, Bangor Christian.
