AUGUSTA – Young snowmobile operators and riders will face fines of $100 or more if they are caught riding without helmets on some Maine trails.

Gov. John Baldacci has signed a bill requiring anyone under 18 years old to wear a helmet while riding on a trail funded by Maine’s Snowmobile Trail Fund. Fines can range from $100 to $500.

A separate bill that received final House approval Monday and awaits a Senate enactment vote is designed to protect people who rent self-storage units from excessive late fees.
