McCrum hit lifts Bangor to victory

BANGOR – After taking a look at the latest Heal Point standings Tuesday, the Bangor softball team knew exactly how important Tuesday night’s matchup against Nokomis was for its season.

The Warriors of Newport were sitting at No. 8 in Eastern Maine Class A despite a 4-9 record – thanks to two wins over No. 4 Brewer – entering the game at the Union Street Athletic Complex, while the Rams were ninth with a 9-3 record.

But Megan McCrum wasn’t feeling any pressure when she stepped to the plate in the bottom of the sixth with runners at second and third.

“I just knew I needed to hit, forget about everything else, get up there and do my job,” the senior said.

McCrum smacked a double down the left-field line, driving in two runs as Bangor rallied for a 5-3 victory over Nokomis.

The Rams go to 10-3 and should get a boost in the Heal Points next week.

Bangor freshman Kelly White earned her seventh win, scattering six hits and striking out eight. She didn’t give up any walks or earned runs.

Nokomis (4-10) had a 3-2 lead in the sixth but Bangor tied it up. Kate Turner singled, got to second on a Hannah Whitney sacrifice and advanced after Erin Porter walked and Jamie Kowalski to reach on an error. Turner scored on a wild pitch.

McCrum belted a 3-1 pitch that rolled down the line. Porter and Kowalski scored, giving the Rams a 5-3 lead.

McCrum, who bats leadoff, was 0-for-3 with two flyouts and a putout before driving in the winning runs.

“I had just had a couple of rough at-bats and I just really wanted to hit,” she said. “My team needed me and it was there so I hit it.”

The Warriors had a chance with a runner at second and one out in the seventh, but White induced two flyouts to end the threat.

Michelle Murray and Danielle Clark each scored a run as Nokomis took a 3-1 lead in the fifth. Bangor’s Heidi Baker got the Rams within one run when her groundout plated Kowalski.

“They had some really good hits in the last two innings,” Nokomis coach Kelly Flagg said. “… We didn’t get an out where we needed it and that allowed them to score when obviously we couldn’t allow them to score. But I was actually pleased. I thought they played together today.”

The Rams struggled with some uncharacteristic defensive miscues and committed four errors in the first five innings.

“Our heads weren’t really in it at the beginning, but we came through and got it together,” McCrum said.

Bangor’s Meghan Chase singled twice and Kowalski added a double. Murray hit two singles.
