BANGOR – There were far less offensive fireworks this time around when the John Bapst and Hampden Academy baseball teams met Wednesday afternoon at Winkin Baseball Complex at Husson College.

The Crusaders’ Keith Nason and FA’s Jason Weymouth hooked up in a pitching duel that John Bapst won 1-0 by doing the little things right.

The last time they met they combined for 29 hits and the Crusaders came away with a 14-13 win.

Weymouth had allowed only one hit Wednesday, a second-inning double by Josh Keefe, through five innings and had struck out 10.

But the sixth inning would prove to be his team’s undoing as the Crusaders played small ball to perfection.

It began with a leadoff infield single by Sean Snyder.

“I was just trying to make contact. Trying to keep it on the ground and run it out,” Snyder said.

It worked; his soft bouncer to the hole was well played by FA third baseman Ethan Annis, but Snyder just beat Annis’ throw to first.

Pinch hitter Chris Leavitt dropped a bunt down in front of the plate and Snyder again showed his speed, outrunning FA catcher Brandon Croan’s throw to second. Weymouth then hurt himself with a wild pitch that allowed Snyder and Leavitt to move up 90 feet.

JB shortstop Alex Means followed and with the FA infield drawn in, he hit a bouncer to third. Again Snyder beat a throw, sliding across home plate as Croan applied the tag.

“It was who was going to get the breaks, or who was going to make their break happen out of there. Unfortunately for us and fortunately for John Bapst, they made the play in the bottom of the sixth,” FA coach Paul Withee said.

The Ponies had their chances. They had runners at first and second with two out in the third inning when Snyder made a play that may have saved the game. Weymouth cracked a line drive toward the gap in left-center field that Snyder lunged to catch.

“I just knew I had to get it. I had to come at it hard. There were guys on base,” Snyder said.

In the sixth, Carey reached on an infield single. He was forced out on Withee’s grounder to short, but Weymouth followed with a blooper to left-center field. Withee hustled to third on the play and Weymouth moved to second on the throw to third.

Nason bore down and induced Adam Conway to pop out to second base and Josh Pelletier to ground out to third to end the threat.

“I was just trying to throw strikes. I have a great defense. They can get guys out,” Nason said.

Nason finished with six strikeouts and allowed only one walk and three hits. Weymouth struck out 11, also walked one, and gave up two hits.
