NEWPORT – Newport police are investigating an alleged rape at knifepoint reported at 9 p.m. Tuesday by a woman seeking treatment at Inland Hospital in Waterville.

The woman, who was a guest at the Pine Tree Motel, told Chief James Ricker that she left the motel about 4 p.m. to go for a walk on Route 2, toward the East Newport Store.

The alleged victim told police that as she was walking, a dark-skinned man in a blue SUV pulled up alongside her and offered her a ride.

She got in the van, Ricker said she reported, and the man allegedly pulled a knife and demanded sex. Afterward, the woman told police she got out of the van and ran back to the motel.

“There are many other factors in this case that are being investigated,” Ricker said Wednesday night.
