A pair of local organizations are planning a busy and informative day for young fishing enthusiasts – or for those who may want to find out more about the sport.
The Sunkhaze Stream Chapter of Trout Unlimited and Maine’s Youth Fish and Game Association will team up to host their first Youth Day on June 1. The event will be held at the MYFGA clubhouse, which is located on the Stud Mill Road at Pickerel Pond.
The Youth Day, as you may recall, was originally planned for mid-May, but a late thaw and a pond full of ice forced organizers to move the event to June.
Youth Day promises to give ample opportunity for kids to learn more about fly fishing from local experts.
Here’s the schedule: From 10 a.m. to noon, there will be basic fly tying and casting lessons.
From noon to 1 p.m., a free lunch of hamburgers and hot dogs will be served.
And from 1-3 p.m., kids will get to fish. Families are invited to bring their own canoes and head out onto the stocked water of Pickerel Pond. Fishing opportunities are also plentiful from the shoreline.
Children with their own fishing rods are encouraged to bring them, though some outfits will be available to borrow.
Among the highlights of the day: The Sunkhaze Stream Chapter of TU will give away two fly rod outfits and flies, as well as a six-month TU membership.
Also, TU will raffle off a fishing trip (value: $275) with a Registered Maine Guide, for one child and a parent.
Getting to Maine’s Youth Fish and Game Association clubhouse is simple. Just head to Milford, drive out County Road until it intersects with Stud Mill Road, and turn right onto the Stud Mill Road. The clubhouse will be on the left.

Penobscot Longrifles to meet
Marksmen may want to head to Stetson this weekend for Sunday’s shoot at the Penobscot Longrifles range.
Competition starts at 10 a.m., with the club’s normal fee structure: Members pay $15 and non-members will enter for $20. Organizers point out that if you shoot just three times a year, it’s cheaper to join the club.
Lunch and prizes will be provided by the club.

Down East anglers doing well
According to Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife fisheries biologist Ron Brokaw, anglers looking to land a few fish may want to head Down East to do so.
In his weekly report, Brokaw points out that the efforts of West Grand Lake anglers have paid dividends.
“So far, we’ve been up three times to survey anglers with these encouraging results: We’ve checked 54 anglers who have caught 30 legal salmon and 14 legal togue,” Brokaw said. “Surface anglers fared well during [a recent] three-day stretch of cloudy, overcast weather … about seven to nine days after ice-out.”
Last Sunday, Brokaw’s survey – conducted on a bright, sunny day – didn’t prove as fruitful, he said. Still, at least one angler did well.
“One of the togue [surveyed] was of trophy size, measuring 321/2 inches and weighing 14 pounds, 11 ounces,” Brokaw reported. “The lucky angler, Roy Fitzpatrick of Houlton, plans to have the well-proportioned fish mounted. After the fish easily bottomed out my 10-pound scale, I told Roy I had to go back to my truck to get a 20-pound scale. Regrettably, there was no such scale in my tackle box, so I sheepishly returned to Roy with the bad news.”
Brokaw reports that another angler, Jeff Kelly of Ellsworth, volunteered the use of his scale, and weighed Fitzpatrick’s trophy fish.
